So Called Friends

When we were living in Cyprus we rented our villa and car off a cypriot couple who had the shop behind ours at the hotel in which we were based. We considered them as friends of ours and we would often sit and have a coffee at the hotel if they were there at the same time as us. They often talked about us all going on holiday together to which we declined to as they wouldn't have wanted us to bring the kids along and we wouldn't have wanted a holiday without them.

For the 3 years we lived in Cyprus we were paying them a total of 1250 euros (approx £1100 GBP or $1600) per month for our villa and the use of a car. Neither me or dh know much about cars so we had decided we were better off renting a car off them (they had a car rental business) longterm and they would see to any repairs it needed so we wouldn't get ripped off by unscrupulous mechanics.

We gave them 2 months notice of our intention to leave and paid our rent on both the villa and car upto the end of November and paid all our bills. We cleaned the house from top to bottom before leaving so it was in better condition than it had been even before we moved in. We left behind a 6 month old fridge freezer and washing machine.

Our contract for renting the villa had expired after our first year in Cyprus but they had never renewed it since we had just carried on as before. We paid 2 months as deposit up front on the villa when we moved in which we were assured would be given to us upon leaving and them seeing the villa was in good condition.

They never spoke hardly 2 words to us once we told them we were leaving. We were going to stay in Cyprus until the end of November but the flights were fast disappearing from Paphos airport so we took the flight that actually got us back here last Thursday.

We thought they were our friends but I have emailed them since we got back to ask about our deposit as the house was spotlessly clean and not received any reply from them. I have tried phoning them but they do not answer their phones. They have a business there so I know that they are constantly checking their emails and my sister emailed them as if she wanted to hire a car and got a quick reply from them so I know they have received my emails.

It seems they are avoiding us. I feel extremely hurt as I feel betrayed by them and that they were only being friendly whilst they were making money out of us. As soon as we told them we were leaving it was like they went out of their way to avoid us. We had to leave the keys for the villa and car behind reception at the hotel as they weren't answering our calls in the days leading up to us leaving. I feel like we have been taken for a complete ride by them. We don't have many friends as we prefer to stay in together as a family rather than go out and socialize with other people.

I'm a little upset about losing the deposit as we could have done with it back as the house was absolutely immaculate on us leaving so there would have been nothing for them to do to rent it out again. The thing that upsets me most though is their attitude and how they have just disregarded us and tossed us aside like our friendship meant nothing to them. I have been checking my cyprus mobile a couple of times a day to see if there is any messages from them but nothing. Not even a 'how are you'.

It will take me a long time to build friendships and begin trusting others again now after our experience with these so called friends.

Oh Emma, how sad.
Try to put it behind you, not everybody's like this. We've been burnt a few times too. Chalk it up o experience. It's sad that things like this make us wary of meeting new frends.

Tbh Emma this doesn't surprise me. I used to live in Greece and had similar treatment once it was known I was leaving and the huge rent I paid every month would no longer be forthcoming. They are probably angry cos it is the end of the season and they think they won't get another person to rent but that dosn't excuse their appalling attitude and nastiness ignoring you. Like Bridget said try to put it behind you and remember not everyone is the same.
